This product comes out in a foam when you squeeze the bottle. Smokey ash gray is the box I ordered. I was a little nervous about this but sectioned my hair into 4 buns and did one at a time. I carefully watched it and rinsed it out once the pieces went from warm to the level of ash brown I wanted. I also didn't do a lot of prices all the way through I mainly did my roots + 1/5 of my hair that wasn't super blonde. If you are blonde and doing this the lighter the piece the longer you have to wait so it doesn't turn gray.
